A mystery “X” icon is showing up when expanding the sign-in menu. This was seen while on Create New Profile page.

This looks like an error. Does anyone know why this is displaying here?
This "x" displays so that users on mobile (under a popular tablet screen width) can close a menu once it has been opened. This is implemented in all hover-based menus. Usability.

I should add, we're moving the position of it so it looks less broken ;)

See Bug #1051016
Have you considered displaying it only for users on mobile (handset/tablet) and not on desktop? In this case I would expect that since I clicked the sign in button to open the menu, I would click it again to close or click outside the menu area to close.
We're showing said "x" based on large tablet (iPad) media query and lower. Much the way if you squeeze the browser width on mozilla.org (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/), the nav hides away and the three-line menu displays.

Ok, sounds good. I no longer see the 'x' when my window is at normal size on desktop.
