User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/31.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140715214327

Steps to reproduce:

Click on the button "Write", that open the compose window.

Actual results:

When you click in the compose window the cursor is not displayed. If you try to select a block it is displayed with a light grey background instead of a dark one. If you try to write, nothing happened, or worst, it opens new tabs in the main window.

Expected results:

Cursor is correctly displayed and you can write in the compose window.
Did you report this to your Linux distribution?
Does not sound much like a Thunderbird issue to me but like skin issues or underlying libraries.

Summary: Problem editing emails → Problem composing emails
I did not reporting this bug to Kubuntu.
I'm using KDE 4.13.3 and no other application (even firefox) have such a bug. It happens on several computer with the same configuration.
It can be a skin bug. It can also be a bad implementation of UI in thunderbird.
I tested this on Ubuntu with KDE 4.13.3 and I have no problems. Please can you add screenshots with the different states of composer window (after opening, selecting a block)?

It's not systematic, it happens times to times.
For example, when you copy text in the clipboard just before open a new composing window it happens more often.

Whiteboard: [dupeme]
I tried it now about 20 times to open the write window (also with copying something and also closing in between TB) but I had always the cursor and the text highlight was light blue.
I cannot say the conditions required to raise this bug.
Here what happens:
http://encolpe.degoute.free.fr/video/Thunderbird%202014-08-28%2018:53:38.mp4
Do you click into the address- and subject fields or only hovering them? The cursor comes only when you click into the fields.
You also can treat me as an idiot.
Next time I will use a screencast tool that make beautiful wave each time I press a button.
Nobody to work on this?
How, when it's not reproducible.
I talked to several persons that experiment the same problem.
The only way to fix it is to restart thunderbird. Sometimes to restart it several times.
We are not all using KDE (Cinamon, Unity).
I find a workaround: when all edition is impossible, click on the compose window the go in the 'insert' menu and choose any entry. Then, cancel the action and magically you can write text.

Then, it seems to be a problem around the HTML mode and, may be, slow IMAP servers that block the daft creation.

encolpe, can you still reproduce this?

Walt, have you seen this?

I haven't used a Linux KDE desktop in years, but don't recall any loss of the cursor problem.

Looks okay in my Thunderbird 60.6.1 on Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS Gnome desktop.
