Build ID: 20140608211457

Steps to reproduce:

This happens intermittently, so there is no specific steps to reproduce it.

Actual results:

Popup menus stop working in Firefox UI and on all web pages.
The popup menu for Firefox, ie system menu does not appear when I click on the firefox file menus.

On web sites, popup menus like dropdown list etc also stop appearing when clicked on.

Basically, anything that is a popup menu stop appearing.

Note: this is not referring to popup windows.

Expected results:

Popup menus should appear when its control ui is clicked on.
Maybe a graphics issue.
Can you paste the "graphics" section from about:support please.
Did you try to test with a clean profile or reinstall FF?

Wow, you have a bunch of add-ons! Honestly, the culprit is probably here.
Maybe you can test in safe mode (even if surfing in safe mode is not always nicely, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode) or disable add-on one by one in normal mode.
Hmmm ... but I have an identical set in a Windows 7 machine synced through firefox sync and it does not have this problem.

I have created a bare new profile and will run the other instance concurrent and see if that hits this bug or not.
Anyway, you can try to reset your profile on Linux (Firefox keeps the folder of your current profile you reset), so your private data are imported without the add-ons and prefs.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-to-fix-most-problems
Starting from this "new" profile, you can add your add-ons one by one.
While I am trying the separate new profile to make sure a fresh profile does not have the same problem. Resetting firefox to fix this problem is like asking people to reinstall Windows when there is a crash, and slowly reinstall all the apps to find out which one broke.

Since plugin seems to be the one major bug source, perhaps firefox can have a plugin install history or a restore point, where users can roll back to an earlier state.

This would at the same time help isolate the buggy plugin and also temporarily resolve the problem for the user as well.

Meanwhile, I'm having two different instance of firefox running the two profiles and trying to have identical web sites run on both.
After disabling "Right Links", the problem seem to have gone away in the normal profile. Needless to say, the clean empty profile did not have any problems too.

Right Links	0.3.8.4	true	{B5F5E8D3-AE31-49A1-AC42-78B7B1CC5CDC}

Right Links is a plugin that allows links to open with a right click. Can this be breaking the popup menus?
I don't know about this add-on, but if it's the culprit, you can report the issue to its author.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/right-links/
Will observe for a week and see if the popup bug occurs again.
ok, it just happened again. What should I do now to help? I already have telemetry and other info set to share with mozilla. What other info can I offer to retrieve and send in?

Note that other than popup menus not appearing, firefox is working just fine. All other features still work, just popup menus within pages and in firefox gui stop appearing.

Advices? Thank you for your attention.
I see this a lot and it's a huge problem for me.

Can I ask what Window Manager you use? I'm running awesome, which is an ICCCM non-re-parenting window manager. I'm wondering if that might be related, as it tickles bugs in otehr things such as Java.

I can confirm I have this behaviour on multiple Debian machines, across multiple versions of firefox/iceweasel and on thunderbird/icedove and co, but no non-Mozilla apps, so I suspect that it is a xul problem.

Starting in safe mode, new profile mode, removing plugins or even completely deleting my .mozilla directory doesn't seem to help.

The exact behaviour I see is that, after a period of time, anything that would pop up a new top-level window (in the X11 sense, e.g. menus, <select> menus, right click menus, URL auto-completion) simply fail. I occasionally see a very brief flicker on the screen as if it's trying and failing to create the window).

Sometimes the menu functionality comes back eventually over time. Restarting the X server always cures it.
What can I do to help the developers track this one down?
@Reporter,

Are you still experiencing the issue on latest Firefox versions?

I have downloaded and will try it, but as it is an intermittent thing it will take a while to verify.

Is this update being sent because it's believed that v43 fixes the problem or just to ascertain whether it has been fixed as a side-effect to other changes in the meantime?
Hi Ben,

We want to ascertain whether it has been fixed in the meantime. If not we can find a right component for this bug so a developer can have a look at it. But first it would be better to know if this is still an issue or not.

If you can reproduce please share the url's or any other info that can be used to reproduce it.
OK, no it still happens with 43.0.4.

In addition, I've switched from awesome to metacity as window manager and the problem persists, so I don't think it's related to that.

What can I do (beyond the information I sent last year) to help the developers debug this?
Thanks for the response. Can you find a pattern? You mentioned it is intermittent, but maybe you can identify some specific steps you did when you reproduced the issue.

No, no obvious pattern. Some habits which may differentiate me from some other users: I run very long sessions. Both X and my window manager run for months at a time, and firefox runs for days until its memory use gets problematic enough to warrant restarting it. The issue tends to show up after a long uptime.

When the issue happens it persists across restarts of firefox, even safe mode restarts or restarts where I completely delete the .firefox directory. It also sometimes affects thundebird, but it does so independently of whether it's affecting firefox.

It can stay a problem for days (but is immediately fixed by a restart of X -- not always a option) but will eventually go away and the menus will just start working again.

You can just about see that X is issuing a redraw to the window that would have been covered by the menu, so it's attempting to display the menu.

A few more clarifications: I'm using "window" in the X sense here. A new firefox window always works. What doesn't is right-click menus, menus at the top of the windows, and browser popups for things like warnings about plugins. So these are windows of type _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_POPUP_MENU or similar, I'm guessing. Tooltip popups continue to work (e.g. hovering over tabs).
Flags: needinfo?(bjb-mozilla)
Adding to above: dragging tabs to change the ordering is another operation that stops working when this state is encountered.
Summary: Popup menus stop working in Firefox UI and on all web pages → Popup menus stop working in Firefox UI and on all web pages with X11
What more info is needed to confirm this bug?
Just confirming, this is still present version 38.7.1.

The bug is tagged "need info". What do you need?

What can I do to help get this long-standing bug diagnosed and maybe even fixed?
Scratch that -- looks like I've already verified it on versions up to 43.0.4.

This affects thunderbird too though so this feels like it's a lower-level problem with the XUL stuff or another UI components rather than a glitch in a specific version of Firefox itself.
I had the same problem and solved with rewriting the Xorg.conf file using nvidia-settings tool.

I don't know exactly what was wrong on the file that had that effect, maybe it was how I configured my multi-head setup.

The unexplainable yet is why it happened only on Firefox.

Hope it helps.

Arch Linux x86_64
Both i3 and Awesome with the same problem on Firefox 50.1.0.

I bet, it must have something to do with the hack that Mozilla programs use to work around X peculiarity, that annoys some people.

You probably noticed, that they do not behave like any other GTK (or Qt, or Motif) program regarding to popup windows. Normally, when popup window, such as top or context menu is opened, it grabs all keyboard input to itself. That means that any bindings that are intended to be handled by some other program (a window manager, xbindkeys(1) or whatever) stop working until you explicitly close the popup.

That is _not_ the case with Mozilla’s XUL-based interfaces: when you press a key, that is not handled by Firefox’s popup window, that window is *closed* and key is reached its destination.

I have the same thing happening to me, for a few months already, and by now multiple times a day. It's gotten to the point where I type out most of my urls because the address bar dropdown doesn't show any longer (but the completion of the top entry still works).
I'm also on i3, like Pablo.
Obviously not sure if that matters, but it does confuse some other applications (like Idea/PyCharm) so I thought I'd mention it.
Also, I can confirm Ben's observation that dragging tabs stopped working, although I hadn't noticed so far.

Below my about:support stuff (the things that seemed remotely relevant to me as a layman).
Not sure wtf happened to "important modified preferences", I'm fairly sure I didn't do most of that by hand at least.
And somehow my graphics section looks a whole lot more intricate than I'd have expected. 0_o
In a way, it's good to know I'm not the only one experiencing this, but it does seem to be an elusive one.
Let me know if I can help in any other way.

I actually use Awesome. But back then I tested the bug on i3 in case it was Awesome specific.

For what it’s worth, it seems that Waterfox [1], as of version 56.2.7.1 at least, does not have this issue. Tested at Debian GNU/Linux Stretch under no WM, which is, as I said above, the setup that triggers the bug immediately.

That’s curious the more so because the latest pre-Quantum Mozilla’s browser release, Waterfox forked off, was subjected by this bug.

Ah, sorry, I said that in the parallel (yet not closed) thread for the same bug [1].

This happens to me as well. i3 on arch linux, firefox is up to date.

  • no URL dropdown
  • no select box options in forms
  • no right click menu anywhere (page or UI)
  • no UI element that creates a new window/panel works (menu, add-on menus, bookmark bar folder expansion, Back/Forward list, etc).

Restarting firefox makes everything work again, but before long the problem recurs.

I get this pretty frequently too. i3. Today I think I nailed it down to specific circumstances: in developing a website I was taking the same actions over and over, since the context menu kept breaking and I needed it for some devtools panel features. Kept trying, it kept breaking. The sequence of events which could reproduce it was this:

  1. Open Firefox fresh with no addons enabled.
  2. Open the website I'm developing. Nothing special. Context menu fine.
  3. Open devtools, go to network panel. Click some stuff on the site which causes some requests. Context menu still fine.
  4. Make a particular request which causes a new tab to open. In particular, this made an ajax call, and the server side (running locally on my machine) triggered Firefox to open a new tab, showing an email it had generated. (Ruby on Rails's "Letter Opener" module.)
  5. Close that newly opened tab. I'm taken back to my site. Attempt to right-click the request which occurred so I can "copy as curl". But the context menu is now broken.

I did this maybe 5 times in a row. I then deactivated "Letter Opener" so that the new tab wouldn't be opened, and repeated again, and the context menu did not break.

Same here (i3 under NixOS).

Weirdly, this started like 6 months ago, went away for a while, and now is back.

I follow a pattern similar to Bart's, so I'll check if it's reproducible in the same way.

Component: Menus → Widget: Gtk
Product: Firefox → Core
Severity: normal → S3

I either have this issue or a very similar one:
opening menus (right-click, extension dropdown, etc.) stops working at some point.

I noticed one pattern in particular that has not been mentioned here AFAICT:
it starts after XOrg (or awesome) has been running a certain amount of time, something in the order of 30 days.

Restarting firefox does fix it for a very short while, usually in the order of minutes but then the problem comes back.
Restarting X fixes it "permanently", meaning it will return after the same amount of time, or at least in the same order.

My setup:
debian stable
firefox 102.8.0esr-1~deb11u1
awesomewm

Next time it happens I will:

  • check whether a clean profile shows the same behaviour
  • try whether "reload"ing awesome fixes it as well

and report back.

If there is any other way I can help this issue be fixed, provide any other information, please let me know.

Redirect a needinfo that is pending on an inactive user to the triage owner.
:stransky, since the bug has recent activity, could you have a look please?

You can run on terminal with MOZ_LOG="Widget:5 WidgetPopup:5" env variables and attach tail of the log (~1000 lines) when you see the issue.
Thanks.

Hi

Thanks for this suggestion.
It started happening again just a few minutes ago (after a system and xorg uptime of ca. 24 days) when opening https://wego.here.com/

Curiously, it seems that when I start firefox as you suggested, the described behaviour starts happening immediately again.
When I start it without MOZ_LOG, it usually takes a while of normal operation until it happens again.

I started firefox’ ProfileManager with MOZ_LOG, created a new profile and it happens there as well! (I.e. it seems to not be related to any extensions)

Restarting my window manager awesome does not mitigate the issue either.

I’ll try to endure this situation as long as I can before restarting xorg to mitigate it for another 3 weeks or so in case you (or anyone) can come up with something else to test.

Thanks for looking into this!

Can you attach the MOZ_LOG ? If you see the issue (missing popups), do you still see log entries to newly opened popups in the log? There should be nsWindow::Create() and similar events there.
Thanks.

Flags: needinfo?(bugs_mozilla)

Oh god, sorry, I have actually forgotten to attach the log the last time, it seems.

The empty lines mark

  • after FF is started, before opening a popup menu
  • after having opened a popup menu that immediately closed again, before closing FF again

Note: with this MOZ_LOG the problem occurs immediately!
Without the MOZ_LOG I usually have a few minutes or actions before this problem starts occuring.

(I’m not sure how this bugtracker works, if attaching the file was enough to get your attention, so here’s a comment in reply to yours.)
Sorry, forgot to attach the log, it seems. Now done, see above.

This shows the same log as the other file of the same Xorg session.

Strangely, the problem does not happen anymore after ca. 50 days of Xorg runtime.
It started after about 25, so after another 25 it seems to stop again.
This sounds like some signed/unsigned problem (but I don’t have anything to back that up).
I’ll try to see if it comes again after 75 days.

Quick update: this seems to have been a "false alarm" or rather "false relief": 56 days of uptime and it just started happening again after an extraordinarily long time (a few days) of not happening.

The problem is here:

So may be 'awesomewm' case too. Emilio what do you think?

Flags: needinfo?(emilio)

Maybe? What does about:support say about your desktop environment?

Flags: needinfo?(emilio) → needinfo?(bugs_mozilla)

For what it's worth, I suffer from this bug, and I run awesome in focus-follow-mouse mode. about:support says my Desktop Environment is "unknown". This theory has a ring of truth to it. HTH.

Okay, so does going to about:config and setting widget.gtk.grab-pointer to 1 fix it for you? (needs a restart)

It'd be great if we could somehow detect awesomewm (or focus-follows-mouse more generally or so)

Flags: needinfo?(bjb-mozilla)

I'll try this when it next rears its head and get back to you.

Any thoughts on why it only happens after a long uptime, and why it persists between restarts once it's started? I read the comment in the code and it all feels a bit kludgey.

Expanding on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1058058#c42:
The issue seems to have started after ca 25 days which might be milliseconds of a 32 bit signed integer AFAIU.
It was easily reproducible during this time: it happened immediately, even in a clean profile, with the debugging environment variables suggested above, and in my normal profile took only a few minutes to manifest itself.
After 50 days it seemed to have stopped but showed up again after 56 days and currently it seems like it happens randomly. I can not reproduce it within a few minutes and also not with setting the debugging environment variables and the 'clean' profile.

Once I see it happening reliably again (either after a reboot or Xorg restart and 25 days, or maybe after ca. 75 days of uptime is my current expectation), I will attempt that fix.

(In reply to Emilio Cobos Álvarez (:emilio) from comment #46)

Okay, so does going to about:config and setting widget.gtk.grab-pointer to 1 fix it for you? (needs a restart)

It started happening again yesterday, again after 25 days of uptime.
I added (i.e. not "changed", it was not there before) this setting as a "number" type, restarted firefox and the problem still appeared again some time (a handful of hours) later.
I also tried adding it as a "boolean" and as a "string" but that seemed to make no difference.
All this was done with a fresh profile and with restarting firefox after every change.
Attached is a log of MOZ_LOG="Widget:5 WidgetPopup:5" firefox -ProfileManager. Luckily/strangely when starting firefox with this MOZ_LOG variable set, the problem appears immediately. Without it I always have to wait minutes or some hours for it to appear. Probably not time- but usage-related.
What still seems time-related to me is that it only starts happening after 25 days of uptime of the X server.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can test/do.
