1059559 - New tab thumbnails are full size images

These will be quite expensive to draw (lets say 12 ms per image on a fast computer) which means that once you have 2 images you all ready way over budget.

What do you mean by "full size"? The thumbnails are accessible through uris such as moz-page-thumb://thumbnail?url=http%3A%2F%2F2014.mozillafestival.org%2F And those seem to be 480x300 for me. I can't seem to find where those numbers come from the code though.

BenWa was seeing thumbnails with a dimension larger than 1000. I see 560x350 which is still much larger than the display size.
