(Whiteboard: [bugday-20140901])
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/31.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140716183446
Steps to reproduce:
Writing an email in hotmail. Copied an animated gif from http://heathersanimations.com/ and tried to paste it into the body of the email.
Actual results:
Nothing. The paste command in right click is there and active, but when selected, nothing was pasted. Works fine in Internet Explorer. This is only on v31 of this browser.
Expected results:
Normal paste, has always worked.
This happens at home and at work ; 2 different OSs ; XPsp3 and Win8.0
Try the basic troubleshooting steps:
1) safe mode: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode
2) clean profile: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
By pasting, do you mean pasting only the URL (text) or displaying it in the email body?

I mean the actual animated gif itself, the object, not the url from whence it came. Funny that the copy command on the object seems to acknowledge because the right click paste command comes up logically in the body of the email, but when "paste" is engaged, no object is to be found. Give it a try.

I don't have Hotmail account to test. And about safe mode and clean profile, did you test?

This works for me. Here are the concrete steps I followed:
1) open http://heathersanimations.com/
2) right click the dancing alien on the left
3) click "copy image"
(create a hotmail account if, like me, you don't have one)
4) log in to outlook.com
5) create a new email, add a recipient
6) in the email, type:
"Hi there"
then hit ctrl-v and paste the alien
This works fine for me. It also works in a basic contenteditable test:
data:text/html,<div contenteditable="true">Hi there</div>
If you copy-paste that into the address bar of a new tab, hit enter to load it, then put the cursor in the "Hi there" on the page, and paste in there, it works fine.
Can you clarify how the steps you're following are different?

Sure.
I open hotmail and begin a reply to a friend. I typically include animated gifs from Heather's Animations. I write, for example, "Hi there" in the body of the email and then I open a second tab and go to Heather's place, click on the alien category on the left which then opens a slew of various alien animated gifs on the right. I right click an animated gif and say "copy" [hoping to store it in the clipboard], go back to the hotmail tab, click in the body of the email, right click and say "paste" and nothing happens. If I do the same exact thing in IE 10 or 11, it's fine, and the last version I'd had of Firefox was 28 (I updated from 28 to 31 in a single step [hope that doesn't play a role somehow]).

Do you think I should completely remove Firefox 31 and then reinstall fresh ? Maybe that update from 28 to 31 without any version in between was not a happy update ?

Guys/Gals : News here . . .
ok, I completely deinstalled and reinstalled v31. No change [which means updating from 28 to 31 is not an issue]. I had AdBlock Plus as an Add-On and told it to ignore Heather's animation site and Hotmail. Still no change. So then I tried one other thing . . . I went to Yahoo email instead and performed the same actions. It works fine !! It's not the browser ; it's HOTMAIL !! And they've recently made a series of updates to their mail system ; just happened like 5 days ago. So I'm guessing they must've overlooked something that has to do with copy/paste functionality, OR they are doing this on purpose to hurt you guys because everything works fine in IE !! Hmmmm.
You can call this solved from the Mozilla standpoint and I won't take up anymore of your time. Gosh darn M$, at it again. Their company is changing I think ; a few lesser experienced people writing code these days as evidenced by several recalled updates that toasted peoples' computers.
Thankyou though for confirming what you did though ; much appreciated !!
I can't believe they would write code so that copy/paste would not work ONLY in YOUR browser. Nasty.

Hey guys/gals :
It's not just any MS mail that this is happening to ; it's just HOTMAIL. I opened a fresh outlook account and another live account and tried the copy paste and it works fine, so it's hotmail alone that seems to be the issue, and god only knows ; maybe it's just MY hotmail, yikes. Sometimes I have seen this before ; when MS wants to herd people in a certain direction for the use of software, they will pull some shenanigans whereby they lock out certain functionalities in order to annoy the user and make them change/update to some new protocol. Maybe they want to get rid of the hotmail domain, who the hell knows.
No biggie.
Firefox is good !
Thanks again.
