Gijs, the tab strip repurposes the assets from 10.9: http://people.mozilla.org/~mmaslaney/firefox/Australis-OSX-Yosemite

I'm concerned that using darker assets will disrupt the visual hierarchy established between the active and nonactive tabs by calling more attention to the background. How are they currently rendering?

Oh, interesting! So maybe this is wontfix? I just assumed we wanted to update these icons as well, because the contrast between the two seemed a bit stark to me at the time - but http://i.imgur.com/N6mJ0Wl.png looks OK to me. Let me mark this wontfix and you can reopen if you think we should still do something here? :-)
