For parity with Google Now, it would be nice if we could support searching contacts and apps on the device.

This is an interesting idea for sure - but definitely not for the MVP version. :)

This Search Activity wasn't originally focused on any "search the user's stuff" kind of angle. So, we haven't really thought too much about that side yet TBH. 

We've still yet to get the type of experience we'd like for web type searches right now so I'd really like to nail that part down first. For us, I think it's still about a faster way to get into search; better UX around digesting the results we get back; easier re-searching; and keeping that search open.
