Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:32.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/32.0
Build ID: 20140825202822

Steps to reproduce:

(On Win7x64) I went to Help > About in Firefox today and noticed that there was an update (to v32) available, so I installed that. While it was downloading (and presumably installing), I went to Help > About in Thunderbird also, figuring there'd probably be an update available for that too, and there was (to v31.1). Firefox was done, so I clicked on the Restart to Finish Installation button, and then did the same in Tb.

Actual results:

The Firefox update installed without any UAC prompt. The Thunderbird update raised a UAC prompt.

Expected results:

I was under the impression that Thunderbird used the Mozilla Maintenance Service to avoid UAC prompts on Windows, so I would expect no UAC prompt. I've seen bug #926975, which says its resolved-fixed, but I'm seeing non-silent updates again. I've checked my about:config, and app.update.service.enabled is true (so it should be working), but app.update.service.errors is 2.

After some further digging, I noticed my app.update.channel was set to "nightly". But Tb31.1.0 is a release build, and anyway I thought the update service was supposed to be of particular help to the nightly update channel...

It's possible that I triggered this UAC behavior by having both Fx and Tb trying to update concurrently, so the service couldn't handle both requests at once?

Unsure what you are asking. Firefox and THunderbird use the same service.

Exactly. But I triggered the update of Tb *while the update of Fx was running*, so potentially there was contention for the update service and so Tb used a non-silent update path instead. I guess my (poorly-written) question is whether it's possible that the update service does not properly handle two Mozilla programs requesting updates from it at the same time.

Ben,

Is this something you can still reproduce?
Flags: needinfo?(benjamin.lerner)
Unfortunately not -- my remaining Win7 laptop died the death of Too Many Broken Parts... I haven't seen this behavior recently on Win10, but then again I also haven't seen many updates to TB.
