Currently they are left aligned, which looks lame with short names.

AFAIK all Moz operating systems centre tab names?

Hmmm, not sure I agree with this.  I think of these tabs as behaving much like
the Win32 taskbar or switchers in clients like mIRC.  The text is aligned left
in both of those examples.

Well, we can make this OS specific in Classic I suppose. 

If you don't mean these to look like standard OS tab controls, maybe they 
shouldn't look anything like standard OS tab controls. You understand what I'm 
saying - if you break one part of the standard tab look, then maybe it should 
look *more* like the taskbar (or whatever) than a row of tabs.

But then you'll have to be careful or you may lose whatever "inutitiveness" using 
standard tabs woulg give.

I'm not actually explicitly specifying that the tabs be aligned left.  I think
that's just what our current tab widgets are doing when a tab is stretched.

I don't agree with this one either.  I know as I'm scanning my multitude of tabs
to find the appropriate one, it's easy right now to start reading the tab name
after each tab "separator" ... the black line between them.

I have a hard enough time scanning the tabs with the new "tabs resize
automatically" change, let alone if the title position within the tabs was
inconsistent.

So not only is the current appearance acceptable, but I find it to be optimal
for useability.  Left-aligned may be "lame", but it's easy to read/skim, plain &
simple.

But that's just my $.02
