When I'm using the classic theme of Windows XP (which should be still supported), the tabs aren't plain colored: There's a brighter tone of gray on the side of the selected tab (➔ screenshot)

Did you restart Firefox after switching to classic?

Sorry, I'm not sure about that (I don't have XP here – just saw this today). Maybe it works after restarting Firefox (on 7th of October, I'll have the possibility to check that).
