Details

Partial selection in the URL bar is different from IE, Opera, & Netscape 4 and
under.

Steps to Produce:

1) Go to any URL
2) Make sure URL Bar is not currently selected (click on a blank section of the
webpage)
3) Click once on the URL bar (Makes it active; Full URL is selected)
4) Click somewhere in the middle of the URL and drag right.

Expected Results: Select starts at position you initially clicked in step 4 and
highlights until where you dragged to.

Actual Results: Cursor changes to the "Move Text" cursor. Selection does not change.

Annoying Workaround: Click once, click again, then click a third time and drag.
Don't do it too fast otherwise the URL Bar thinks they are double clicks.
This is a pet peeve of mine. I often use this method to go back one directory
in the URL, or go to the main page of the URL (ie I'm on
http://www.mozilla.org/bugs/text-searching.html and I want to go to
http://www.mozilla.org/bugs/, so I select "text-searching.html" and delete it)

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9.5) Gecko/20011011
You can use this preference if you don't like the default behaviour:
user_pref("browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll", false);

(see the release notes to learn how to change hidden preferences)

Marking as dup of 62495 "clickSelectsAll should not trigger if you're selecting
text",

This bug is more similar to bug 87410, drag in selection in URL bar should
start a new selection instead of dragging text.
