After mail import from Outlook, sometimes duplicates show up in the mozilla inbox

At a user's, I imported the mail from outlook. All went well, no problems. He deleted his mails from outlook, but left a couple in the outlook inbox, and then quit using outlook. The thing is, every now and then, those mails in the outlook inbox were popping up in the mozilla inbox, and we couldn't determine the cause (maybe when rebuilding the index). Also it took a while until he figured out where those old mails come from. It happens on Windows 95, mozilla nightly build 2001-11-01, outlook express. (I report the bug from my own computer, and bugzilla recorded my browser version)
the problem happens at import time - what version of the import tool did you use? Do you mean outlook, or outlook express? There was a bug, I thought fixed, that outlook or outlook express import didn't add an x-mozilla-status line to the messages it imported. I also thought that Cavin looked into this in the past, so I'm reassigning it to Cavin, and cc'ing Scott in case my memory is faulty.

The import went well. The problem happens long after import (days). Sometimes right after installing a new nighly build, other times, "by itself". I don't work on that computer, yet I've seen it once, and it was right after mozilla reported rebuilding the inbox index. outlook express
The import may have looked like it went well, but if you look in the actual mail file, you'll see that the messages that keep coming back don't have an x-mozilla-status line in the headers, and the importer is supposed to put those in. If it doesn't, the exact problems you're describing will happen.
