RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1046799

People

(Reporter: phill.luby.uk, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:32.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/32.0
Build ID: 20140924083558

Steps to reproduce:

Attempt to add talktalk.net email address in the email application.

ZTE Open C, build 20140505080626.

Actual results:

It fails with "Unable to automatically configure your account. Correct your e-mail address or try the manual configuration option [no-config-info(mxsame)]".

Can't setup manually as talk-talk do not support secure connections over IMAP or POP3, and manual set-up does not allow unsecured connections.

Expected results:

Ideally it should just work as talktalk is a large enough ISP to warrant auto configuration, but as a fallback I would have expected to have been able to choose a connection without security.

Correct settings can be found here at http://help2.talktalk.co.uk/email-settings-imap-pop3
Ugh, that's very unfortunate. I've tweeted at them to try and start an advocacy thing (didn't find a readily available mail address), but I have very little hope. Bug 1046799 covers allowing users to use manual setup in these cases and informing/advising and providing a link to workarounds. That's targeted at v2.2 because it adds strings; there's a pending review/content authoring to-do on my part once we deal with some other correctness blockers that impact v2.0 and v2.1 currently. The current workaround as described there is to have the user create a gmail account that polls their existing talktalk.net account since that's significantly less of a horrible/bad idea.

And tote that if talktalk.net get their act together and implement support for SSL/TLS we can add an entry to the ISPDB (different component, can be added at any time since it's a simple static website). Our autoconfig logic won't accept non-SSL/TLS entries which is why I'm just duping direct to the manual config.
