the filename "abook.mab" is very good. Why not rename it to "Personal Address Book.mab" ?

Because we have an 8.3 limitation on some platforms, for one?

No. I already have `localstore.rdf' (14 characters) and `XUL FastLoad File' (17 characters) in my profile folder, and other files with even longer names -- so 8.3 is obviously not a problem.

This has nothing to do with this bug. You should check the support forums (see http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/) in the first instance rather than asking on bugzilla.
