Google Hangouts added an "auto-mute while typing" feature (even outside of browser focus) in 2013. It only applies to hangouts with 4 or more participants.

However, it was an extremely unpopular feature. Google Hangouts recently improved their ambient noise filtering to filters out typing sounds (though they still auto-mute while typing for hangouts with 4 or more participants).

This would be a nice feature for the Loop client. If we don't have the resources for advanced ambient noise filtering, perhaps we could auto-mute while typing just for external keyboards (because laptops keyboards are usually pretty quiet) or just for participants who aren't talking.
