:antlam and I discussed some possibilities for the behavior of the back button in editing mode and determined there are some interesting things we can do with it, but these aren't for v1. This bug is to discuss and implement these possibilities for a future iteration.

Just to clarify, this is for enabling the navigation buttons again, and determining what happens when back is pressed - for example, we can cancel editing mode (instead of showing the "X" button as on mobile).
We should copy desktop behavior: back and forward should have the same behavior in, and outside of, editing mode.
