In bug 1044295 we've seen that typing "go" may give several results, ditto with "goog", while "goo" may give comparatively few.

I wonder if we can come up with some ways to make the adaptive results (the cause of this inconsistency) more stable while typing.

One possibility may be to make it a more fuzzy query. Say if "goo" is typed, we compare the similarity between the input from the previous search - if they're very similar, we also allow results matching "go", but at a lower priority.
