I have a locked SIM card from another country in the phone which has been disabled by the mobile provider some weeks ago according to an SMS it sent. Calling also doesn't work, but I have only seen once the message that the SIM card is locked after installing an update (2.1) when the phone was prompting for the PIN and auto-hid the dialog. In the Settings, the SIM card shows as SIM PIN locked.
Locking the screen and unlocking it brought the prompt for the PIN back. After installing an update later, there was no indication that the SIM card is locked at all.
