The desktop file in /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop is provided by the Ubuntu Firefox package. If they ever package Firefox Developer Edition separately, they will presumably use a special desktop file that points to the right icon. In the meantime, if you want to add your own desktop file for Developer Edition, you can start from this one that I'm using locally. Be sure to edit the paths that start with /home/past/FirefoxDeveloperEdition to match the location in your filesystem where Developer Edition is installed. The move it to ~/.local/share/applications/ and launch the app from unity.
