Currently, a=2 is used to trigger showing the Advanced Search form and a=1 to show the results.

I think we should look into always including the form in the advanced search results page (collapsed by default). That might help with the query param situation. But I think we still need to figure out when not to call ES at all and just show the search form. It might just be based on the presence of other query parameters (q=, for example).
