User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; rv:33.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/33.0
Build ID: 20141113143407

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Firefox by clicking on the icon on the taskbar.
2. my homepage is set as the about:newtab homepage. Press Control + W.

Actual results:

On the taskbar, the name of the program changes from "about:newtab-mozilla firefox" to "mozilla firefox". repeated uses of control + W keep changing the name back and forth, but the tab and window don't close.

Expected results:

the window and tab should have closed firefox. This problem also occured in nightly.
Also, i have adblock plus, stylish, and ghostery installed. When i switch firefox profiles to a profile with the default configurations, settings, addons, everything, there is no problem with control + w.

Component: Untriaged → New Tab Page
As long as it's not reproducible with a clean profile this is caused by one or more of your addons mentioned in comment1, so it's not a Firefox issue.
