Ha..is it so hard to fix if it is already assigned? Just give an error saying "No Server specified" would be fine.

what is the current status on this?

Still hasn't been touched on a 1.5a nightly build (2003082604). Any news on this?

For all the impatient people here, Seth has well over two thousand bugs assigned to him. So I suspect that he's not getting to this bug any time soon.

Clicking on this URL now comes up with the message "Access to the port number given has been disabled for security reasons." - sort of a fix, but not quite! It's better than it was doing, though.

This occurs on the Firefox/Thunderbird combo too. Back to "Would you like to subscribe to 9?"

This seems to be partially fixed in Firefox, at least in 3.5.7. Accessing a news:// URL simply opens whatever client is available / configured for NNTP (TB, Outlook, etc.) However, Firefox does not seem to pass sufficient information to let the news client open a specified server / group. Here is a test case, involving Firefox 3.5.7 and Thunderbird 3.0.1. Note that in my case Thunderbird has an account configured to know of the NNTP server news.mozilla.org 1. Enter the URL news://news.mozilla.org/netscape.public.mozilla.wishlist into the browser, and press "Enter" 2. Thunderbird client is launched 3. Thunderbird opens to default account (i.e default email in my case) [ Alternative: 2a. (TB already running) Focus switches to running Thunderbird. ] Expected behaviour: 3. Thunderbird should open the appropriate NTTP account and navigate to the specified newsgroup.

I don't know if I'd say it's fixed. When I click on the link, the status bar now says "Connecting to..." and stays that way. So it's still broken, just broken differently.

I am ok to close this as the reported bug is fixed. But clearly there is lots of other broken behavior, reported in the comments, that should be fixed. I don't know if the desired behavior is documented anywhere (e.g. a requirements document on a wiki?) If so then it might be nice if people could link bugs to related requirements pages?? Just a thought --
