Steps to reproduce:

I'm using an imap-based email account. I deleted a message by clicking the Delete button when the message was displayed.


Actual results:

The message was deleted but it did not go to the Deleted folder. The Deleted folder was initially created by Thunderbird. Interestingly, the message appears in the imap server's Bin folder.


Expected results:

It should have appeared in the Deleted folder.

Tb moves deleted mail to "imap mbox named Trash at imap server", if default setting is used.
Unless user touches Tb's setting, Tb won't move deleted mail to "imap mbox named Bin at imap server" nor "imap mbox named Deleted at imap server".

mail address = [e-mail]. Gmail IMAP?
If so, "what mbox/folder at where with what actual string" do you call by "Deleted folder" and "server's Bin folder"?

(A) Gmail's "Trash folder in US English" is shown to imap client as "imap mbox named [Gmail]/Trash".
If Gmail's "Trash folder in US English" is "Bin for UK English etc." at server, it's shown to imap client as "imap mbox named [Gmail]/Bin"., becuase "Bin" is used as "trash folder name in Gmail" according to your "Display Languge" choice by you.
(B) Because Gmail IMAP notifies Tb that "Gmail's trash folder"  == "[Gmail]/Trash or [Gmail]/Bin", Tb uses it as "trash folder in Tb".
(C) When "Trash" in English is used as "mbox name at imap server", Tb uses it as "special folder for trash in Tb". And when localized Tb, Tb shows it as "localized name in Tb" at folder pane.

At Gmail, "trash folder" is "Bin", it's shown as "[Gmail]/Bin" to Tb, Tb uses it as "trash in Tb", and Tb shows it as-is.
At Gmail, "trash folder" is "Trash", it's shown as "[Gmail]/Trash" to Tb, Tb uses it as "trash in Tb", and Tb shows it [Gmail]/Bin(localized name in localized Tb).

Default of "trash folder in Tb" is "Trash" at top level.
If Display Language at Gmail is not US English, Tb usually can't find "mbox name of Trash" in mbox list passed from server. "When Tb can use trash at Gmail as trash in Tb" is after Tb can know "trash in Gmail is [Gmail]/XXX" .
Tb perhps requests creation of top level "Trash" upon first use of the imap account.
If Gmail & Gmail IMAP, is Gmail Label of "[Imap]/Trash" created at Gmail?
(top level "Trash" in Tb is represented as  Gmail Label of "[Imap]/Trash" in Gmail.

I don't understand how to answer your questions. I'm using TB 31.7 i.e. as supplied in Ubuntu. I don't want to upgrade due to possible risks.

I've changed the action in Account Settings -> Server Settings for 'When I delete a message' to 'Just mark it as deleted' and TB now puts my deleted messages in the Deleted folder which is what I want.

If this reproduces for you when using a current version and not using Mark as Deleted, please reopen the bug report
