This is just from a patch I generated locally, I don't know if we want to do more to preserve history in-tree.

I don't think that preserving more history is necessary. I just do updates by having a checkout of the upstream repo in my tree, pulling from that, and then committing the changes into the gecko tree. This works surprisingly well for such an obviously dumb idea.

I also generally land changes with a try run but without additional review since it all got reviewed upstream and try should catch any integration issues.
