I've seen this on some other applications - it would be useful to be able to specify a "quiet time" for notifications on a daily basis, e.g. 7pm to 8am, where incoming email wouldn't be notified by audio/vibration means.
The notification would still be in the menu bar.
The reason for this is that it gives the user an option to have a regular quiet period and switch off from dealing with emails - an audio interaction is saying "come read me". Whilst the visual indication would still be there, its easier to ignore that - or in the worst case read it, but then you're reading it as a conscious decision, rather than being nagged.
