No longer blocks: desktop-marketplace
I wanted to clarify that desktop marketplace will be launched with Fx35 (link to "apps" will be added to tools menu) As such all content need to be ready by Jan 13th. Thanks

Hi Richard,I'm including a ;link to a marketing deck I prepared for desktop marketplace, this provides some indication on value prop, marketing opportunities etc and I'm happy to talk with you further on that. I think the second part of the article should focus on what developers can do to make their app compatible with desktop. The overall purpose is to share with developers information on what is being launched, the opportunity and how they can benefit from having their app listed, with the ultimate goal of having more desktop apps. https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/presentation/d/1Sd6Sm5p2ya8cc_0ww7kd1Ij8xGWPb6bEaq4g3LGDPBc/edit#slide=id.p18
The core page in terms of desktop apps is: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Options/Open_web_apps_for_desktop this covers - practices for content development, by reference to the App Center Design section (where https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Apps/Design/UI_layout_basics is particularly relevant and has a strong focus on design for multiple screen sizes/orientations) - available APIs, by reference to https://wiki.mozilla.org/WebAPI#APIs which I believe is our definitive list of APIs and supported platforms - payments is also cover on this page (although at this stage only that there aren't any - so it would need to be updated to cover support for paid apps - CC and operator billing) In addition there are probably a number of places withing the Monetiztion section (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Monetization/Introduction_Monetization) where the payment options for desktop app could be highlighted Which leaves - security impacts - as I understand it this is the Mac installation issue - which has been noted on the 'for Desktop' page, but probably doesn't need any more coverage, as it's not something developers need to consider explicitly in their design/development/distribution. From the discussion today, the other pages that should be worth updating are: * https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Prepare/Promoting_your_app to highlight promotion/highlight opportunity - to do this, I'd need to know: 1) how do developers take advantage - e.g. is there a mechanism to submit apps specifically for highlighting on the desktop marketplace 2) details of the promotion/highlight mechanisms (any mockup/sample images?) * https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace - probably worth adding a highlight box to 'announce' the desktop marketplace app availability * app center https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Apps/Design/Planning/Planning_your_app and Marketplace zone https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Prepare/Deciding_what_to_build to note the availability of the desktop marketplace and suggest, particularly for complex ideas/app, that creating a desktop and mobile 'companion' version is an option worth considering. Beyond that I believe that we already present the App Center/marketplace Zone content in such a way as to encourage developers to build apps for all supported platforms - but additional emphasis could be provided as material is otherwise updated - I can send an email around to the other writer to alert them. So unless I've missed/misunderstood anything significantly, the current content is pretty well aligned with highlighting desktop as an opportunity and only small changes should be needed. These should be doable more or less concurrently with the launch.

(In reply to namir@mozilla.com from comment #3) Hi Niran, just reread your comment and noted your reference to "the article" - have I missed something - was a specific article being requested - or have I understood this bug correctly in my comment #4?

Hi Richard, You have not missed anything. Few comments: 1. Regarding payments- the above sections will need to get updated once we launch desktop payments which as of now is set for Jan 27th. 2. Regarding https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Prepare/Promoting_your_app - most of the page focuses on actions the developer can take to better promote the app, we could include examples/ screenshots of promotions we had to promote certain apps in this paragraph "And there may be a bonus in gaining a Marketplace feature — Mozilla will (with your permission) use featured apps in future local and global app promotional campaigns." Some examples: *world cut campaign slide 5 in this deck- https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/presentation/d/1iNyYjc6tcXML43cNsIJGszs39gtEuQKgWupreY4tB2Q/edit#slide=id.p26 * Easy Taxi campaign- slide 6 same deck * Marketplace newsletter- slide 7 3. Regarding https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace, agree about adding an announcement box, makes sense to ahve it live when we are out of "Beta" 4. Agree about updating app center Thanks!
Updates made: * https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Options/Open_web_apps_for_desktop added note about dedicated Apps button with link to support pages item * https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Prepare/Deciding_what_to_build a para to suggest not discarding desktop only app ideas because they can be supported the web apps for desktop * https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Apps/Design/Planning/Planning_your_app - * https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Prepare/Promoting_your_app - example of campaign content – although not directly related to desktop. After reviewing the page I detail, I see no particularly useful updates needed Future updates: * Jan 27 ** https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Options/Open_web_apps_for_desktop - information on paid apps ** https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Publishing/Submit/Load_your_app - information on paid apps for desktop – I’ll also check the rest of the https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Publishing/Submit tree for potential updates ** https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Monetization/Introduction_Monetization - section to be checked for any relevant updates * TBA ** https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace - highlight box when apps for desktop leaves beta
Flags: needinfo?(namir)
Desktop payments now due Feb 10, will then action: ** https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Options/Open_web_apps_for_desktop - information on paid apps ** https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Publishing/Submit/Load_your_app - information on paid apps for desktop – I’ll also check the rest of the https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Publishing/Submit tree for potential updates ** https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Marketplace/Monetization/Introduction_Monetization - section to be checked for any relevant updates
