User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:35.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/35.0
Build ID: 20141211142524
Steps to reproduce:
Have a session in Firefox 36 with several tabs (in fact, I have several hundred). Set browser to "show my windows and tabs from last time". Close the browser. Rename Firefox 36 install location and install with 37a1. Open Browser.
*all of my addons are disabled
Actual results:
The tabs in my session that were present when I was using Firefox 36 all became "New Tab" tabs. The URLs of my original tabs are gone. To clarify, if I had 10 tabs of different sites in Firefox 36 they will appear as 10 New Tabs in Firefox 37.
If I revert to Firefox 36, my tabs appear normally.
Expected results:
Firefox 37 should display the tabs in my session that were saved with Firefox 36.
Firefox 36 is the developer edition, that uses a different profile than other Firefox installations.

I'm using the _same_ profile for both 36 and 37. I ensured that no new profile is created. Everything about my session in 37 is the same except it restores all my previous tabs as New Tabs.
Are you saying a session saved in 36 is incompatible with other Firefox versions except for the developer editions?

I can't reproduce, FWIW (on linux). My steps:
mkdir /tmp/foo
~/programs/firefox-devEdition/firefox -no-remote -profile /tmp/foo
[open some tabs, configure to restore tabs at startup per comment 0]
[quit]
~/programs/firefox-nightly/firefox -no-remote -profile /tmp/foo

(I think sjw just hadn't realized that you were using the same profile.)

Can you reproduce if you create a new profile and load that first in 36, create some tabs, close Firefox, and then try in 37?
If not, are you comfortable attaching a copy of the session store data so we can look at why it would work in one but not the other?

I've found that this is actually a bug in Firefox Portable (from portableapps.com) not Firefox itself. I didn't think that the portable launcher could actually be responsible for a bug like this but it is the case. Sorry for the confusion!
