Description

Advanced search has grown over time without much consideration for hierarchy. A simpler interface with a clear visual hierarchy would make it easier for contributors to navigate the feature and hopefully increase engagement.

Derek, can you attach the UX iteration for advanced search here?

User-AutoComplete Control, first of two new controls for the advanced search page, and possibly elsewhere on the site.

Control for visually separating tags.

Second of the two new controls for simplifying advanced search. Still need to do some of the other clean-up stuff as well as create something for mythmon's idea of a live updating advanced search.

Live update-ableversion

Live update-able version. Keeps all the primary textboxes (as well as user-control and tag-controls) in the center, and shifts everything else to the sidebar.

Previous filters that included a "Don't Filter" option, would be hidden until added with "Add a filter" button in the sidebar.

Topics need to be grouped by product where applicable. Unselected products have their topics hidden in this version, but that may be something to change and just have them as collapsible lists that default to the collapsed state.

live-update2-tabs.png

Smaller, more obvious tabs, moved up and to the right to increase vertical space.

Current advanced search results included in this mockup (no changes there).
Are we taking the opportunity to remove the redundant topics here ?
The topics we insist in listing but never populate.

Look at the support forum search within https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/search/advanced .
The view of search options as currently on prod includes many topics that are always empty.

Similar to the metrics dashboard https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/dashboard/metrics where there is a long list of interactive checkboxes.
Many of the topics. Something in the order of 90% are empty and can never be populated because they are not options offered when support questions are asked.

Just one example the topic "[] Firefox crashes" is always empty
because the topic used is "[]Fix slowness, crashing, error messages and other problems"
There are many questions about crashes, however it is just not possible to ask a Firefox question with topic crashes. There is in my opinion no point whatsoever in wasting space cluttering the dashboard or search options with that topic & other invalid options.

As mentioned in thread "[Attn Admin] Problems with Sumo Search" https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/contributors/710977

This looks great! But so far persistence has not been mentioned.

Do filters persistent across search sessions and within searches (i.e. forward and backward tab)?
If not, then I think it does not meet the most important needs stated in bug 746840.

Is persistence indeed part of the plan?

Does comment 7 need a separate bug?

The persistence question is my bug 743360 (the alter ego of WONTFIXED bug 746840)

Have you looked at the meta bug 1054652?

NI Joni & Madalina
Is there a progress to report on this please ?
What bugs if any does this depend on ?
Is any champion tracking this bug and bug 1054652 ?
And if so what other control documment, trello etc is applicable ?

There is a NI for iamderekries@gmail.com but I am not sure he is active any more.

Has this fallen between the cracks as needing progress on the thorny issue of shoehorning Topics into being useful for both the (AAQ) Ask A Question flow and the categorising of KB articles.

Hey John, Adrian is currently working on this, but he is with us only 50% of the time and he just got started on SUMO, so it's going to take a while before this is ready. So far he has worked on familiarizing himself with the platform and putting the infrastructure in place to implement Derek's UX. As soon as there is something to show, we'll start sharing.

This isn't being tracked in any sprint, since Adrian is currently spending only 50% of his time with us.
Given that Adrian is working on this, I'm assigning it to him.

Removing the NI. I don't see any action needed from me at this time. We do need to remove the extra KB topics, but we can't do that until we update the AAQ topic code. Waiting for suggestions from Madalina on the latter.

OK thanks for the update Kadir. Having not seen this in a sprint I wondered if it was being tracked in any other document.

Joni, OK noted we are now waiting on Madalina.

Hope you all enjoy Whistler.

Just as an update, we're expecting this to be finalized by the end of Q3. So September the latest. As Kadir said unfortunately we cannot track it in a sprint but it is being worked on.

New search preview (v0.2)

Hi,

Here's a preview of what the new search interface looks like on my computer. I've added a few filters to the Knowledge Base and Support Questions tabs, and all three have a "query" filter in common.

The main thing here is that I have replaced the previous long lists of checkboxes with enhanced <select> elements. It makes the form a lot smaller, and allows users to do some basic search over the different values very easily. I hope you'll like it!

Current status: code for v0.1 is under review, code for v0.2 will be put up for review as soon as v0.1 is merged.

interesting preview, but might I suggest that the structure is almost upside down.

The first thing I want to set is an application. The second is a search string, third would be a date range, for instance since Version XX was released. The users operating system would be more useful than the category.

If that returns to many hits I would then be looking at some of the category stuff. But rarely will I consider it first as the arbitrary categorization of information is something I am really trying to avoid. Particularly as the person making the categorization is usually not competent to correctly identify the category.

I am looking for people that have been having trouble with XXXXX I do not care how they categorized their issue. I do not care if the got a response or considered the answer they received was helpful. But if I type "crash address book" into search I do not want 20,000 hits on book and when I hit the back button I want my criteria back so I can have another go.
PR 2648, related to this bug, has been merged and deployed.

https://github.com/mozilla/kitsune/pull/2648
Hey Kadir,
What's happening now please ? I guess unfortunately it's now slipping to 2016,
If so I hope it then does not stall again due to the topics being unchanged.
Or am I mistaken as I am not too sure exactly what cool search is, and I am not sure about progress on Ask A Question [AAQ] topic changes.

The main requirement in my opinion is a change to ensure only valid and relevant topics are shown.
From reading these bug comments I am not sure that is what will actually happen.
Are we in danger of getting a neater looking search display, with the same invalid and empty topics cluttering up the new dropdown listing ?

Presumably we still need the AAQ topics sorting out.
Would I be correct in saying AAQ topics need sorting out anyway regardless of this specific bug, so is there bug for that ? and is it being worked on ? (Presumably it will not be done under bug 886554)

I note from Github https://github.com/mozilla/kitsune/pull/2648#issuecomment-146206456 (Adrian 7Oct 2015)
>I am indeed not going to work on it this quarter.
>It's sad that no one is going to work on this though,

I did look at attachment 8660810 [details] New search preview (v0.2) however although having topics shown from a selector box with a dropdown and slider does save space once the single column dropdown is open it will have more lines needing looking at than a double column checkbox listing.

Hi John, I asked about deleting old topics during last week's platform meeting. When the new AAQ comes out, we still have to do A/B testing, so we're not getting rid of the old AAQ just yet. This means we need to hang on to the topics used in the old AAQ until we've finished A/B testing.
