Ad hoc helper applications are searched in explicit directory instead of PATH

Details
Whenever I click on URL which does not have a helper application defined I get a window with three choice: the first choice is indicating an application as handler for this specific file. The "choose file window" opened then only looks for applications in current (or any other by-hand-indicated directory). Thus it is demanded to indicate an explicit path to an application. It becomes irritating when you use system wide applications available from bash prompt otherwise, especially when you often change machines and use mozilla instance whith no proper helpers defined. I think that mozilla should look in PATH for ad hoc helpers.
