Attached image FFdevupdate.JPG
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:34.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/34.0
Build ID: 20141125180439

Steps to reproduce:

updating by "about developer edition"

Actual results:

System authorization is required to execute setup.exe (abnormal, there is a service)
Partial update failed
The Update could not be installed (patch apply failed)
Each time I must go to the site to download the entire program
firefox-36.0a2.en-US.win64-x86_64.installer.exe

Expected results:

Normal updating as for all versions of FF
updater.exe, not "setup.exe", sorry (cf above)
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64; rv:36.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/36.0

Same problem on Windows 8.1 x64

I also tried to download and install from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-aurora/firefox-37.0a2.en-US.win64-x86_64.installer.exe

Windows SmartScreen blocked the installer because of an "Unknown Publisher" error.
Install was successful after skipping the warning.

The downloaded installer was signed by "Mozilla Fake SPC", issuer is "Mozilla Fake CA"

Could this be the reason for the failing updates?
The updater rejecting the downloaded update because of a misconfigured (test?) signing certificate?
Component: Untriaged → Application Update
Product: Firefox → Toolkit
Probably would be fixed by patch in Bug 1121286
Depends on: 1121286
Remark : Nightly 64 bits updates are OK, the bug is proper to developer edition (ex-Aurora)
Summary: Firefox dev edition (Aurora) 64 bits : update doesn't work → Firefox dev edition (Aurora) 64 bits : update doesn't work due to not being signed
Partially fixed this morning : the update was done normally but system authorization is still required (it is not in nightly 64 bits and other versions/editions of FF).
Version: 34 Branch → 37 Branch

Bug 1121286 is very likely to have fixed updates for Dev Edition win64. Sounds like you got a UAC prompt though, which bug 715876 should have resolved.

I have just had the UAC prompt again
I just tested updating from yesterday's Firefox dev edition (Aurora) 64 bit to today's and it successfully updated without UAC and I verified that it used the maintenance service.

Reporter, please try installing yesterday's Firefox dev edition (Aurora) 64 bit and try updating again.

Yes of course
Where is yesterday's version please ? I have only today's version

I reinstalled 18/01, 12:16 but there is no update. I can expect for the next update...
It's done.
I installed it "above" my previous one and there was an update
and so sorry but I had the UAC prompt another time
Open tools -> options -> advanced -> Update

Verify that the checkbox with the text "Use a background service to install updates" is checked
If it is checking uninstall and then install before trying again.
Also, uninstall the Mozilla Maintenance Service before re-installing
I did everything : uninstalling FF dev, uninstalling Mozilla maintenance service, reinstalling yesterday version...

and I had the UAC prompt again

Maybe the bug was not fixed in the version you indicated to me
I tested it with that version and it is fixed in that version. No idea what is going on with the build on your system but it not working without it being signed is expected and now that it is signed it is working for me. Give it a couple of days to see if it straightens itself out now that the binaries, etc. are signed.
Yes, thks, I am expecting for next update.
Remark : Nightly 64 (38) is still OK (no UAC prompt)
Update at 14:37 (2:37 PM) French time
UAC prompt again
Update 2015/01/20 13:32 (1:32 pm)
and UAC prompt again
I will try on another machine
New update and new UAC prompt 2015/01/21 1:59 PM
(Windows 7)
Possible explanation : my folder in "program files" is "firefox developer edition", not "aurora", because I reinstalled it.
When you installed it above the ancient Aurora, the folder remained Aurora. In that case, the service ran correctly.
With "firefox developer edition", it doesn't work
UAC prompt for update 2015/01/22
Robert, is the explanation in comment #23 likely to be at fault here?

Pierre, have you checked the file permissions on the folder? That seems like a more likely reason for a UAC prompt...

Very unlikely.

Where can I send you a screenshot ? By mail ?
Isn't the uac prompt avoided by the service ?
Flags: needinfo?(pchazal)
The folder has been created by the installation, not by me
I sent you the properties
Is it useful I reinstall FF dev with customization in a folder "Aurora" and wait for the next update ?
On a clean VM of Win7 x64

Downloaded the 1/21/15 build at:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2015-01-21-00-40-11-mozilla-aurora/firefox-37.0a2.en-US.win64-x86_64.installer.exe

I installed with defaults to:
C:\Program Files\Firefox Developer Edition\

Opened Help -> About Firefox Developer Edition

Update staged without UAC.

Restarted and update applied without UAC.

I didn't understand these lines :

> Opened Help -> About Firefox Developer Edition
>
> Update staged without UAC.
That refers to that in the About window it states applying update and this will only happen if the service is in use.
I didn't succeed.
I didn't see where I could have access to "Update staged without UAC"
and i couldn't avoid the uac prompt

**** sigh ****

Sorry
Did you try another machine as mentioned in comment #21?
Do you have access to a cleanly installed system that you could try it on?
Yes I can but the other machine is in my girlfriend's appartment. I'll do it to-morrow.
Very interesting news : in the another machine (W7 too) everything works normally : no UAC prompt for FF dev edition 64 bits updates.
The bug seems now proper to my main machine
(in the other machine, sorry)

In the main machine, new update and UAC prompt as usual
In options, advanced, update, "use a background service to install updates" was empty
I have just corrected. It should be OK at the next update. I will confirm it

Pfff...

Yep, that is likely what is going on.
Its OK now, sorry and thks for helping
