Well, I'm really sorry I can't provide further information on this right now, but I think it is not a bug in Mozilla: other apps started to fail, and I find really strange that an update in a mail app can cause other apps to crash, so I will not blame Thunderbird for this. I updated Adobe Flash Player just before Thunderbird, and right now I'm thinking the problem was there.
As I solved everything by erasing the disk and restoring a previous state via Time Machine, I have no reports on the crash, and cannot reproduce it. I'll mark this as resolved until the problem appears again; I'll try to update Thunderbird again (it is back on the previous version) when I have time to face a possible trouble, and report again if that occurs.
