It is common practice to offer users access to an advanced search option from the search. Currently if the users search is rubbish with more than a thousand results we offer nothing to help them limit results other than modifying their search term.
Search results pages and the search dialog need a link to "Advanced search" to allow users to actually effectively search. This is exacerbated by the fact that only some 25% of support articles are indexed anywhere else.

To add to this rather than file a separate bug: please improve the search to allow standard boolean operators, quotes, etc. I tried "address bar" "icon spacing" and got the usual 1000 max hits, many of which simply included "bar", so it looks to be returning any matching terms not all, ignoring quotes, not sorting by search score. Could you not just use a Google search?

Simon: It is preferable to file new bugs instead of adding other issues on to bugs. It is much easier when bugs represent one task instead of having multiple ideas in them. Please don't add new issues to old bugs.

Sorry Mike, wasn't sure what the team's preference would be and guessed wrong. Will file a new one now, cheers.
