User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:35.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/35.0
Build ID: 20150112203352
Steps to reproduce:
Case 1: I type as fast as usually the first 2-3 letters of an email address in the recipient's area. TB handles (can't type anymore in TB, windows not responding) and crashes.
Case 2: I type letter by letter (i.e. much more slowly than in case 1) but without any interruption: autocompletion starts to work but after 3-4 letters, TB handles and then crashes.
Case 3: I type the first letter of the email address, wait for autocompletion to propose solutions, navigate in the proposed solutions and then refine the search by typing the following letters of the address: it works fine
Actual results:
In the first 2 cases, TB handles and I have to force to quit and then restart TB. I have no traces of a crash report.
I tried in safe mode and the same behaviour occurs.
I tried with or without the option morecols.autocomplete.match_just_beginning from the MoreFunctionForAddressBook plugin but the behaviour is still unchanged.
Version of TB is 31.4.0
OS Ubuntu 14.04.1
Dell Laptop latitude E6500
Expected results:
When I type an email address, I would like to have the old behaviour which was an autocompletion based on the first letters of the email address. I never had problem until the introduction of the new "search" behaviour from version 28 or 30 (don't exactly remember).

The problem is that there is no crash report available. The crash report tab is empty !!! Once, as TB had handle, I let let the window opened. It stand more than 1 hour and finally, I had to close the window and use the "force to quit" button.

I just uninstall TB 31.4.0 and then installed TB 33.0 from MozillaTeam PPA. The behaviour is better: I can now type 4 letters before TB handles :-D

I misunderstood. You are talking about a hang - where Thunderbird is still running but stops responding

Sorry, bad translation. Yes I'm talking about a hang.
As a complementary information, I have an old (latitude D810) laptop with the same version of Ubuntu and TB 31 installed. I get no problems when typing email adresses on this one.
The difference between the two configurations:
Latitude E6500 (TB hangs when typing): LDAP access and many accounts (work, personnal,...)
Latitude D810 (no particular problem): no LDAP access and an address book which is much more small.
These are the main differences I notice.

Added a hang report for mac version, which is very similar to the behavior in this issue. The hang report is generated when forcely closing the bird after a long freeze time.

Since I deactivate the access to the LDAP server on my professionnal account I can type without any hang problem. I noticed that it is necessary to restart the computer in order to see the difference (first time I deactivate the LDAP access, I didn't restart the computer and didn't see any difference.
However, there is still a problem since autocompletion was working perfectly with the "old mode" (looking only for first letters of the email address).

The following nicely summarizes previously reported bugs - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?v4=ldap&o7=anywordssubstr&o3=substring&list_id=12075560&f8=short_desc&v3=ldap&j2=OR&j6=OR&resolution=---&resolution=FIXED&resolution=INVALID&v7=hang%20perf&f4=short_desc&query_format=advanced&f3=component&o4=substring&f2=OP&f5=CP&v8=hang%20hung%20slow&f6=OP&f7=keywords&product=MailNews%20Core&product=Thunderbird&o8=anywords&columnlist=changeddate%2Ccomponent%2Cbug_severity%2Cbug_status%2Cresolution%2Cstatus_whiteboard%2Ckeywords%2Cshort_desc&order=bug_status
Is the hang with high CPU? And do any of these match your issue?

I don't know exactly how many adresses are on the ldap server. There are at least 500 people in our university + students.
The most surprising now is that hang appears when typing some combination. As an example, if I try to send an email to sylvia, I type "syl" and then thunderbird hangs. I monitored the CPU usage with the htop command and there is no high CPU (2% and TB still hangs)...

As an additionnal comment, I can say that since I deactivate the LDAP server, the overall behaviour is better with less hangs (now I can work) BUT the problem didn't totally disappear.

Thanks for the update. Since then, bug 1064230 has been fixed. Do you find the hang behavior to be gone in version 38?

Sorry,
I just took a few minutes to try with version 38.2.0. I can't restart the access to the LDAP server so impossible to try for the moment.
I will try later to see if the behaviour has been improved.
Best regards

Hello, I am a Thunderbird 38.3 user and landed on this site trying to investigate this recent problem of slow autocomplete on an email address. It is very annoying & has caused errors in sending due to the wrong address populating without me realizing. It mostly happens on the first (sometimes second) name typed in the TO field on any new message. Names thereafter on the same message are fine, autocomplete is normal. I have access to a couple other machines with older versions of TB and they are fine.
From some of the email threads I have seen, this is an extremely old bug. I viewed a Youtube video from a year ago on how to fix this with some settings in about:config. Thought it worked at first but, alas, it did not.
Hope some sharp developer can get TB back to normal.
Thanks!

After comment 14, we are still needing more information.
We'd like to hear your current status, and have more information so we can move your issue forward.
NR, your issue sounds like a different bug.

My Thunderbird is not crashing, it is hanging on auto-complete of first email address. Seems to get confused & finally populates a name, but not always the one I thought I clicked on. It has caused me several sends to the wrong name. This VERY FRUSTRATING. Mostly this is only on the first name, and when more names are typed in the same message they do not hang on auto-complete. _NR

Last week I tried to reactivate LDAP address book: as soon as the LDAP server had been activated, TB hanged.
