Details
The normal, preferred way to open a new window of an application (or a new instance of an application) is to click on the task bar button of the application with the middle mouse button.
Firefox 35.0.1 diregards this rule if in the settings the option "new tab instead of window" (or similar, I don't know the English version, but it is the first check box in the Tabs section) is selected.
Before 35.0.1 this option referred to opening a new window or tab when a hyperlink with the attribute 'target="_blank"' was clicked. Now it also refers to middle click on the task bar button. This violates standard application behaviour rules of Windows.

The issue was almost certainly caused by the malicious safesearch.com and prevailed even after several different attempts to uninstall it.
A Firefox reset solved the problem.
