Tabs.getSelectedTab() should only be null when there are no tabs (i.e. GeckoApp has not yet been initialized. Maybe also when the last tab is removed?). This is a problem in some cases where an action takes place before GeckoApp is initialized (e.g. bug 1090287, which adds a null check to fix the issue) but is likely unnecessary and in most cases.
