User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/40.0.2214.93 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: 1. Select an email. 2. Delete it by clicking "Delete" or pressing the "Del" key. Actual results: In about 3/4 of all cases the selected email(s) is/are deleted. In about 1/4 of all cases the selected email(s) is/are deleted, but Thunderbird hangs for about a minute. During this time, Thunderbird does not respond to any input or repaint, and windows adds "(Not responding)" to the title bar. Expected results: Thunderbird should always delete the selected email(s) and stay responsive.
This happens in an IMAP Inbox with 153 messages on a mailbox containing about 1.8 GB of mails.
Chritian, please see https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems and post your results here. Thanks.

Summary: Thunderbird hangs for about one minute if I delete emails from inbox → one minute hangs if I delete emails from imap inbox
Thanks, Wayne. My observation: As soon as I disable Windows Defender, my reported hangs don't occur anymore. Disabling MS-Windows integrated search or running Thunderbird in Safe Mode do only have a neglectable effect.

(In reply to Christian Schlotter from comment #3) > As soon as I disable Windows Defender, my reported hangs don't occur anymore. You should set an exclusion in Windows Defender http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/wiki/protect_defender-protect_scanning/how-to-exclude-a-filefolder-from-windows-defender/f32ee18f-a012-4f02-8611-0737570e8eee for the Thunderbird profile directory https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_where-is-my-profile-stored Does that help?

I set the exclusion in Windows Defender as described in your links, but unfortunately this does not help. I have to add that the duration of the hangs I'm seeing varies, one minute would be an extreme case. Often it's "just" 15 seconds. During these hangs the CPU utilization of my system is very minimal, and Thunderbird itself is listed as "inactive" with 0% CPU in task manager.

Sent an email to echo@tu-berlin.de 2. Repeat 1. until first echo email arrives, otherwise continue 3. Switch to inbox and delete arriving echo email 4. Observe if hang occurs: If no hang, go to 1. I had to send 8 emails until the hang occured. The hang occured around 21:09:45 and lasted until I created the profile dump. The attached screenshot is Daily during the hang.

38% of time in nsLocalFile:CopySingleFile 42% of time in ntdll.pdb So all the delay is in doing IO. Does problem go away if you have *Windows'* started in safe mode with networking enabled? - win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode

Yes, in safe mode the problem goes away, while in "normal" mode I can immediately reproduce it.

(In reply to Christian Schlotter from comment #5) > I set the exclusion in Windows Defender as described in your links, but > unfortunately this does not help. Either the exclusion is incorrect, or your data is not there (did you move the profile or any mail folders from the default location), or Defender is not functioning correctly. But in any case, based on your great details it's quite clear the cause is Microsoft Windows Defender, and there's no way for Thunderbird to help
