There should be a preference to activate or deactivate History (history.dat file)
Mozilla shouldn't need history.dat file to function properly.

Couldn't the "remember visited pages for the last __ days" setting be used?
If it's set to 0 -> no history is wanted -> history.dat is deleted?
bug 84766 and bug 112432 are fixed
