The RealOne player comes with two plugin files: nprealplayer.so.6.0 and rpcl3260.zip. The player install puts them in ~/.netscape/plugins. When they are copied to the usual place for mozilla (<install dir>/mozilla/dist/bin/plugins for CVS build or <install dir>/mozilla/plugins for 0.9.6 tar.gz release), the plugin is not recognized: it doesn't show up in about:plugins and clicking on a CNN video link gets the missing plugin alert. Based on a suggestion in n.p.m.unix, I tried renaming the plugin file nprealplayer.so. After doing that, the plugin did show up in about:plugins with the proper MIME type. However, clicking on any CNN video link reproduceably crashes mozilla. All this behavior is the same whether I use 0.9.6 or a CVS build with c/o date 11/30. RealOne player does work as a mozilla helper app. The RealOne plugin works with Communicator 4.77. Also, the RealPlayer 8 plugin works for me with mozilla.
Could you please try a talkback-enabled build and report the talkback id?

I tried a talkback 0.9.6 version and did the renaming of the plugin file as before. With this version the behavior is different. There is no crash. Instead, the new window opens as usual and has most of its normal content, but the region in the upper-left corner where the embedded player normally appears simply remains gray. To clarify, with the other 2 builds (0.9.6 tar.gz and recent CVS), the entire new window comes up gray and then mozilla crashes.
the .so .vs. .so.6.0 issue is being worked on under bug http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106806 not sure why repeated clicking crashes...
I just tried this with 2001-12-14-08 on Linux, RealOne player build: 9.0.7.151. My observations are the same as shochat's in commend #2: it does not crash but the area of the popup where there is supposed to be video there is only random garbage. I will attach a screenshot that shows how it can look. Steps to reproduce: 1) Install the plugin as mentioned previously in this bug. 2) Go to http://www.cnn.com/interactive 3) Search for "VIDEO more >>" in the middle of the page and click on that link. 4) Click on one of the video shots in the popup that shows up. Result: Random garbage appears in upper left hand corner where the video is supposed to be played. No audio is heard.

To get the installer, go to: http://huxley.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html?src=rpbform Fill in the details (obviously choosing i386 Linux as OS). DON'T download from the links that show up first, because that's realplayer 8. Instead, look at the bottom of the page which says: "RealOne Player for Unix - Preview Release If you would like to try the alpha version of RealOne Player for Linux 2.2 x86, use the button below." I do not know if Real plan on continuing developing this piece of software now that they are going partly open source, but we will see.

Need to confirm with Real folks on how to address this one.
Whiteboard: [PL2:NA] → [REAL ISSUE][PL2:NA]
It would be interesting to know what will happen with RealOne when the open source Helix client is released by Real next months. Will they include a Mozilla plugin with that one?
By the definitions on <http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/bug_status.html#severity> and <http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?format=guided>, crashing and dataloss bugs are of critical or possibly higher severity. Only changing open bugs to minimize unnecessary spam. Keywords to trigger this would be crash, topcrash, topcrash+, zt4newcrash, dataloss.

Shouldn't we add the "realplayer" keyword? http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/describekeywords.cgi#realplayer
