Steps to reproduce:

When I receive some meeting calendar entries (ICS files), sometimes buttons in the mail window ([Accept]/[Decline], [Update]) show up in the top of the message window to add/update the message to a connected Lightning calendar.  Sometimes this doesn't happen.  Particularly, this has occurred regularly with ICS files from meetup.com, while they previously used to work.

After checking the contents of older (still working) messages from meetup.com and recent ones, the difference was that meetup.com is now sending the ICS files with a Content-Type: application/ics.  If the ICS file is sent with Content-Type: text/calendar, everything works fine.

Would it be possible to add process ICS files with Content-Type: application/ics the same as ICS files with Content-Type: text/calendar?


Actual results:

Resent same ICS file using Content-Type: text/calendar, and was able to directly add meetup to a calendar with buttons in the mail message window.

Currently the only workaround is to save the ICS file, and then import it.  Which works, but is unnecessarily inconvenient.

This is a violation of RfC 5546 and 6047. Have you requested meetup.com to return to the previous behaviour? To be sure that there's no other issue, can you please attach one of the not working invitations (the entire email)?

I've already contacted meetup.com and they've acknowledged my report.  However, I don't know if they will do anything about it yet.  I'll reference them to the above RFC's.  Maybe that will help.

I have saved and E-Mailed the same meetup.ics file to myself, and it works fine.  Of course, Thundebird uses the Content-Type: text/calendar.  I've also run the ICS through a validator, and it verifies as formatted correctly.

I don't think meetup.com cares. Many other clients (even my iPhone/iPad) accept Content-Type: application/ics, so unfortunately that's leaving us out in the cold.

It's been 5 years. Meetup.com (and likely others) are still using application/ics. Looks like many applications are supporting it. Also, noticed that Zoom conference invitations are including both application/ics and text/calendar attachments.
