Big Developer Event

In November 2015, we will hold the first ever “The Why of the Web”* event in Portland, Oregon. (* You can see why we need your help. :)

The Why of the Web is the place for open web advocates to get together to talk about the future of the web and how issues such as privacy and security will shape the technology and implementation decisions we make. It’s the place where the makers of the web discuss what security and privacy can and should look like. It’s the place where discussions about DRM and H264 would happen. Where offline caching discussions with people across the industry will happen.

It’s a cross-industry, cross-community gathering. The place where the lead thinkers and implementers can have open and honest discussions. Have a beer together, spend a few hours implementing a new idea or figuring out the balance between privacy and usability.

Why of the Web is not shaped by profit needs or any one organization’s agenda. It’s a place for the open web to evolve.

We will be creating a website, promotional materials, name badges, event signage, etc from the name and guidelines you give us. So the more direction you can give us, the better. 

We would like to have a one page place holder website in time for GDC to announce there. I realize this is really tight.

I think we need a final name before we announce and the beginning of a brand and look and feel but the look and feel could evolve.

The event will take place in November.

3/5 hand-off 1st round options (Matej)
3/10 final name decided
3/20 round 1 brand identity shared (Sean)

The brand identity hand-off day is dependent on the name being finalized by 3/10.  

Changing assignee to Matej to start and the due date to the name hand-off day. Will update as we go.

There's a lot of great background info here, which is hugely helpful, but as I've started to dive into this, I wonder if you have a really crisp, one-line summary of what the event is all about. 

If you could only tell a person one thing about it, one reason to attend, one thing that makes it different and unique, what would it be?

It is the place you go to not only learn about the future of the web, but to meet the people making it and help make it. When there are decisions facing the web, DRM or not?, this is the place you'd go to discuss, influence and decide.

Apologies again for the delay here. This one is proving a tough nut to crack. While I'm approaching this from a strategic and creative perspective, I realize I'm not very well versed in this world and not as familiar with the audience as I'd like to be. There are terms and phrases and concepts that I just don't know. 

I'll share a list of where I've gotten to on Monday, but I think a good next step from there would be to get a few people together for comments and brainstorming. 

Stormy, let us know who should be part of that from your team. It might be good to pull in some others as well (someone like Craig Cook comes to mind).

In the meantime, thanks for your patience. I just want to make sure we get it right.
