Bug 1083877 added a donation link in the about dialog.  There are plans to advertise the donation possibility on the start page also. The url now points to the general mozilla donation page https://sendto.mozilla.org/page/contribute/givenow-seq?source=thunderbird_about. 
We need to figure out where that should go so that the money can get earmarked for thunderbird.

Project specific donation pages are gone (bug 1018951). SeaMonkey just fixed this in bug 1081726 by having http://www.seamonkey-project.org/donate/ where you can donate to SeaMonkey with the money going to a PayPal account set up for the SeaMonkey organization.

Some alternatives would be:
 A) let the donations with thunderbird referrals go to some thunderbird specific account. I don't understand the details about why "tracking tied donations was the cost center" (bug 1018951 comment 20)... 
 B) have a PayPal account for Thunderbird (like SeaMonkey) and let the money go there. I suppose the account would be set up by the Mozilla Foundation and some access granted to some people from the Thunderbird Council? We need some easy way at least to find out if there is money to be spent without going through months of bureaucracy. 

More/better ideas?
