Since install.build is configured for raid1, install.test should be configured the same. On install.test, /Deploy is a symlink to /Volumes/Deploy while on install.build /Deploy is simply a dir on the root of the raid array. Steps here would be: * unload deploystudio daemon from launchd * remove the symlink * cp /Volumes/Deploy to /Deploy * backup / to an ext drive (just to be on the safe side) * add the root disk to a single disk raid1 array * then add the second disk as a hot spare and let the rebuild begin This should all be possible to do on the live system

I've started the move to upgrade this to a raid1 mirror. * unloaded deploystudio daemon from launchd * removed the symlink * rsynced /Volumes/Deploy to /Deploy Also removed the share point on /Volumes/Deploy and recreated it on /Deploy Added dsadmin user with r/w access And last, I reloaded the deploystudio daemon so it should still be in a working state to do reimages.

(In reply to Jake Watkins [:dividehex] from comment #0) > This should all be possible to do on the live system This is an incorrect statement. To convert the root volume disk to a raid set, the system will need to be booted to an ext drive. See dcops bug1145211

The ext drive plugged into install.test failed while trying to ditto the boot volume. DCOPs is going to replace it today. Wow. ext drive was replaced and suffered the same fate. I'm wondering if this is a compatibility issue or if something is wrong with the mini itself. my gut tells me this might be a side effect from the usb bus not meeting the power needs of the hdd

:vinh replaced the drive with a new (out-of-box) drive. We'll see how this goes.

It failed again. I'm giving up for the moment. My parting thoughts are: Are the hdd models all the same and this is a compatibility issue? Maybe a driver update? Is this a problem isolated to Lion 10.7? Might be time to build a yosemite DS server. Is there a hardware problem with this mini or its usb hub? Is the internal usbhub able to provide enough power to ext hdd? :vinh stated the hdd doesn't take an external power adapter but you can still use a usb power injector to override the +5v coming from the mini. To eliminate possible causes, :vinh plugged the same usb drive into install.build. I started a copy of the root fs. I haven't seen any errors creep up in kernel.log so it looks good so far. One telling error that appears on install.test when the drive is plugged in and then again periodically during heavy write operations is: Mar 20 11:44:48 install kernel[0]: USBF: 6134430.143 AppleUSBEHCI[0xffffff8011876000]::Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus 0xfa, timing out! (Addr: 5, EP: 2) Since I haven't seen any of this on install.build, I think it is safe to assume install.test is at fault. It may be faulty hardware or it may be a compatibility issue. According to inventory, install.build and install.test are different hardware models.

Shot in the dark: going to halt install.test then have DCOPs plug the hdd in and let it boot. Then I'll check for AppleUSBEHCI errors in the kernel log. If we still see errors, next step will be to try a different brand/model hdd

I was able format it and run a ditto copy of the root fs to the backup volume without single error message. When DCOPs is back in scl3, we'll continue where we left of on converting this to a raid array.

The internal disks have been converted to Raid1 and are currently syncing. I'll leave this open until the rebuild is completed which could take up to 24 hours. The last steps to do this were: * add usb drive and format * copy the root volume to the usb disk using ditto * bless the usb disk and set it to boot * reboot to the usb disk * convert the internal primary disk to a single volume raid1 * bless the raid1 volume and set it to boot * reboot * add the secondary disk to the raid1 volume and let it rebuild Some output for posterity: [root@install.test.releng.scl3.mozilla.com ~]# bless --info "/Volumes/Backup" finderinfo[0]: 0 => No Blessed System Folder finderinfo[1]: 0 => No Blessed System File finderinfo[2]: 0 => Open-folder linked list empty finderinfo[3]: 0 => No alternate OS blessed file/folder finderinfo[4]: 0 => Unused field unset finderinfo[5]: 0 => No OS 9 + X blessed X folder 64-bit VSDB volume id: 0x92B4641B72DA6B43 [root@install.test.releng.scl3.mozilla.com ~]# bless --folder "/Volumes/Backup/System/Library/CoreServices" [root@install.test.releng.scl3.mozilla.com ~]# bless --info "/Volumes/Backup" finderinfo[0]: 157046 => Blessed System Folder is /Volumes/Backup/System/Library/CoreServices finderinfo[1]: 0 => No Blessed System File finderinfo[2]: 0 => Open-folder linked list empty finderinfo[3]: 0 => No alternate OS blessed file/folder finderinfo[4]: 0 => Unused field unset finderinfo[5]: 157046 => OS X blessed folder is /Volumes/Backup/System/Library/CoreServices 64-bit VSDB volume id: 0x92B4641B72DA6B43 [root@install.test.releng.scl3.mozilla.com ~]# bless --mount "/Volumes/Backup/" --setboot <reboot here> [root@install.test.releng.scl3.mozilla.com ~]# diskutil appleraid enable mirror /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/ Started RAID operation on disk1s2 Macintosh HD Resizing disk Unmounting disk Adding a booter for the disk Creating a RAID set Bringing the RAID partition online Waiting for the new RAID to spin up "115D88C3-EAB5-4C77-9879-0ADEDEE97A65" Finished RAID operation on disk1s2 Macintosh HD [root@install.test.releng.scl3.mozilla.com ~]# diskutil appleraid list AppleRAID sets (1 found) =============================================================================== Name: Macintosh HD Unique ID: 115D88C3-EAB5-4C77-9879-0ADEDEE97A65 Type: Mirror Status: Online Size: 499.8 GB (499763871744 Bytes) Rebuild: manual Device Node: disk3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # DevNode UUID Status Size ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0 disk1s2 06EA8629-075A-4FEE-BEB6-39B3E1C039D7 Online 499763871744 =============================================================================== [root@install.test.releng.scl3.mozilla.com ~]# bless --folder "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices" --setboot <reboot here> [root@install.test.releng.scl3.mozilla.com ~]# diskutil appleraid add member /dev/disk1 115D88C3-EAB5-4C77-9879-0ADEDEE97A65 Started RAID operation on disk2 Macintosh HD Unmounting disk Repartitioning disk1 so it can be in a RAID set Unmounting disk Creating the partition map Adding disk1s2 to the RAID Set Finished RAID operation on disk2 Macintosh HD [root@install.test.releng.scl3.mozilla.com ~]# diskutil appleraid list AppleRAID sets (1 found) =============================================================================== Name: Macintosh HD Unique ID: 115D88C3-EAB5-4C77-9879-0ADEDEE97A65 Type: Mirror Status: Degraded Size: 499.8 GB (499763871744 Bytes) Rebuild: automatic Device Node: disk2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # DevNode UUID Status Size ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0 disk0s2 06EA8629-075A-4FEE-BEB6-39B3E1C039D7 Online 499763871744 1 disk1s2 996760DB-E7A9-4847-9308-11DD7251B5FB 0% (Rebuilding)499763871744
