User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:36.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/36.0
Build ID: 20150224134236

Steps to reproduce:

Click on a link in any external application (including Thunderbird) using FireFox 36

Actual results:

A new FireFox window opens with the default home page. The link requested is not shown. Issue commenced immediately after upgrade to FireFox 36.

Expected results:

The link target should be opened as a new tab in the currently open FireFox window.
Solved - went to Preferences -> General -> Startup and made FireFox my default browser (even though it already was previously).
I have the exact same problem on Ubuntu/Xubuntu 14.04 32-bit. Setting Firefox as a default browser (as Andrew Pam suggested above) didn't help. I also removed the entire ~/.mozilla folder and started fresh with no plugins or any personal changes - didn't help either.
It solved by itself, after restarting the system.
Same problem here on Ubuntu 14.04, Andrew Pam method works for me
I believe you also need to completely exit and restart Firefox after (re)making Firefox the default browser.
Well, in the morning everything was OK, now the issue is back. I don't get it.
