Similar to how [sponsored] is shown for sponsored directory tiles, we'll want [suggested] for suggested tiles.

Similarly, the user can click on that tag to get more explanation of the functionality.

kghim, are the legal requirements of showing [sponsored] different for sponsored suggested tiles? You mentioned both a suggested unpaid and paid tile would just show [suggested].

To be clear, the on-click overlay text shown is more of a legal explanation and that's different from the always visible user explanation text for bug 1126188.
Summary: Show suggested label/tag for suggested tiles with explanation text → Show clickable suggested label/tag for suggested tiles with overlay text
It currently reads: "This tile is being shown to you on behalf of a Mozilla partner. You can remove it at any time by clicking the [X] button. Learn more...<link to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/tiles/>"

My suggestion is: "This tile is suggested to you by Firefox. You can remove it at any time by clicking the [X] button. Learn more..."

With a [suggested] label and that text, nothing seems to indicate sponsoredness. I'm not sure how explicitly we need to label something as paid.

"This tile is suggested to you by Firefox."

1. I think it is important that we create the sense that Firefox is doing the suggesting - not an unknowable 3rd party, so, +1 to "by Firefox"

2. I think we need to give more context for why it is suggested - adding "based on inference of your interests" ?

3. I do not think that we need to use the term "Tile" here. "Tile" is an internal / partner facing term, and I understand that it does not work very well in localisation - (i.e. ceramic oblongs used to decorate walls have not given rise to other metaphorical uses). Why not call it an "advert", or "notice", or "content" ?

4. Why change the label in the UI? "Sponsored" - what difference does it make to the user? I would suggest that we use "Sponsored" for both Directory and Suggested (nee Related) Tiles, or "Sponsored - Suggested" (that may be too long). "Suggested" is rather more confusing to me. I need to know it is sponsored, and then I may wish to know why it is suggested.

So, my suggestion is:

[Sponsored] or [Sponsored - Suggested] as the tag and then

"This content is suggested to you by Firefox based on inference of your interests."

We won't need this for the initial suggested tiles that are all unpaid/affiliate.

Hey Guys, I was having some fun riffing...obviously I leave UX/UI to our expert(s) :) Maybe this is a path, maybe not....

But hey, I was thinking after we talked we are wrestling with the chance to be different and cool with our tiles (i.e., our Tiles and concepts are WAY cooler than all other browsers and their boring tiles), the legal concepts around truth in advertising (i.e., telling users what this "ad" is and was it paid for), and not putting too much craziness to confuse our users.

So, I was thinking...Suggested Tiles appears not to be a specific type of tile but rather a grouping based on tech, that can include both Mozilla Tiles as well as Sponsored Tiles (and maybe others not sure yet). So, if we separate out Suggested Tiles into its own area on the New Tab Page, then under the Suggested Tiles area we could have different types of Tiles that have the notifying banners on them so its clear to the user.

I tried to mock it up using my New tab (see attached) which is really bad attempt I know because I suck at art and this is difficult to demonstrate, but maybe this can help with a path to get to where we can still use the overall concept of Suggested Tiles, break it down into types under that area, and still leave the "Legal" labels for notice purposes simple as "Mozilla Tiles" and/or "Sponsored" which we can explain off on another link as paid/not paid etc...

Let's chat when I am in NYC next week.

Some good ideas here Geoff. This is similar to what some of the guys here have concepted around the 4th column reserved for paid/suggested tiles. With our current tile dimensions and considering the user's screen resolutions, the real estate to show a dedicated bottom row or 4th column could be an issue. I think we can learn a lot from the introduction with one suggested tile and take it from there. Yes, let's discuss when you're in NYC.

Per gpiper. Please confirm.

For affiliates:
"This site is suggested to you by Mozilla. You can remove it at any time by clicking the [X] button. Learn more..."

For paid clients:
"This site is suggested to you on behalf of a Mozilla partner. You can remove it at any time by clicking the [X] button. Learn more..."

For 39, we'll put [SUGGESTED] on sponsored directory tiles as well as affiliate+sponsored suggested tiles.

The overlay text is per comment 8:
- affiliate/unpaid = "to you by Mozilla"
- sponsored/paid = "to you on behalf of a Mozilla partner"

We don't put the tag for history tiles nor affiliate directory tiles.

This includes removing the ability to click the suggested tile user text to get the legal overlay. Instead, clicking the [SUGGESTED] tag will bring in the overlay.

emtwo, could you prepare a patch for 39 uplift that doesn't change strings files? There shouldn't need to be any special en-US checking as only en-US will be getting sponsored suggested tiles per bug 1160369.
