The only way this could happen is if there is no stdin, and I'm pretty sure many other things would break in that case. If someone wants to fix this, be my guest, but a theoretical file descriptor leak on a runtime opt-in tool is not a high priority.

You make a reasonable point that this probably isn't high priority, but it also took you 251X more characters in your response than to fix the bug at hand. Perhaps this would be a good candidate for a mentor bug?
