When I enter in "face" into the awesome bar, there are many items appearing that are in practice the same. I am running Firefox Account sync.

while you are right they are the same, cause we know they are, there is nothing in the definition of a URI that can tell us www.facebook.com is the same as facebook.com and the same as https versions of them. One can make them different (I'm sure in the wild there are pages doing that).
We just can't tell from the URI. We'd need some sort of heuristic to be able to recognize them as pointing to the same page (yes, we could somehow use redirect information, but it's a little expensive and hard to run at the right time)

btw, we will likely try an experimental change in bug 1046074, and see what users feel about it.
