Steps to reproduce:
I had several open messages, and they have been open across several sessions (opening and closing Thunderbird).
Suddenly a window popped up asking me if I wanted to optimize (something...) to recover lost disk space. I accepted. But when it was done, all my open messages had turned into blank windows. Only the message's subject (on the tab) was intact.
