We're struggling to get all of the pieces in place to do a release. One piece that has not been updated since Thunderbird 33.0 is the What's New page. I don't think that we have the resources to maintain this page.

What's new for 17: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/17.0/whatsnew

What's new for 24: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/24.0/whatsnew

What's new for 31: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/31.0beta/whatsnew (This one is basically completely empty, no what's new page was done for 31 other than the empty beta page)

There is no what's new page for Thunderbird 38 yet. There is a proposal to move this to Bedrock in bug 1124037

Given that we have not maintained this, I propose that for 38, we simply remove the link to What's New from the product. We will still have the release notes which have a list of new items, and are easier to maintain with the nucleas release notes tool.

See https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/38.0beta/releasenotes/ for the current version, which is a reasonable prototype of what you will see in the released version.

Another thought would be to do a series of blog posts, and link the What's New page to those blog posts. We should do those blog posts anyway.

So what should we do with what's new? Does anyone have the bandwidth to enter something here for Thunderbird 38?

Those put a friendly face (i.e. more than boring text) to new features. I'm not offering opinion on value, but my gut reaction is let's wait til we have marketing on board.

Can't the link just point to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/38.0beta/releasenotes/ (or the equivalent for 38.0 release)?
Or we could create a simple what's new page based on the release notes content.

If you mean with picture, yes, this would acheive the original purpose. Comment 2 would not.
That's probably Bug 1117786.

Obviously it would be better if the page was maintained. It would not take much to do a decent What's New page. Kohei, is this something you would be willing to work on?

Sure, I'm happy to work on it.

I guess Bug 1117790 won't be solved before Tb38, so even if we divert the content of the release notes, a screenshot need to be added separately. BTW, what's the highlighted features of 38? ^^

I don't understand the issue of the screenshot in bug 1117790. What is this, and how does it affect What's New?

Can we morph this bug to "Add Thunderbird What's New to Bedrock" or is there an existing bug for that? Or is the issue just writing the page?

In the short run we should redirect that page as in comment 2. I believe I recently received the needed SVN rights to do this myself.
Bug 1117790 would be a blocker only if we build the What's New page based on the Release Notes. It won't be a problem if we have a simple standalone page like this:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/24.0/whatsnew
Component: General → Thunderbird
Product: Thunderbird → www.mozilla.org
Summary: Remove product What's New page link → Add Thunderbird 38 What's New page to Bedrock
Whiteboard: [kb=1714031]
Version: Trunk → Production
So what's the plan here?

1. Change the whatsnew URL to the release notes URL in Thunderbird code
2. Redirect the whatsnew URL to the release notes URL server side
3. Create the whatsnew page anyway

At the Thunderbird meeting yesterday, Roland suggested that a page be created on SUMO that listed what's new items, and included links to SUMO articles. That seems like a way to get some community-generated content up in a way that could also be localized. So that is probably now the default plan.
Should we have a server-side redirect from www.mozilla.org to the SUMO page?

Yes we need a link to the SUMO page.

My current Thunderbird beta what's new page redirects to this:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/33.0beta/whatsnew/?uri=/thunderbird/whatsnew/&locale=en-US&version=38.0&os=WINNT&buildid=20150511142835

The redirect process starts with the preference in Thunderbird:

mailnews.start_page.override_url

which is set to:

https://live.mozillamessaging.com/%APP%/whatsnew?locale=%LOCALE%&version=%VERSION%&os=%OS%&buildid=%APPBUILDID%

I believe this comes from the rewrite rule in SVN at:

mozillamessaging.com\sites\live.mozillamessaging.com\trunk\htaccess\thunderbird\whatsnew\.htaccess

    #Thunderbird 38.0
    RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} (^|&)version=(38.0)($|&)
    RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} (^|&)locale=([^?&]+)($|&)
      RewriteRule .* https://www.mozilla.org/%2/thunderbird/33.0beta/whatsnew/?uri=%{REQUEST_URI} [QSA,R=302,L]

I'm not really sure of the best way to link all of of this to the SUMO page. Suggestions?

change redirect

Although I am supposed to have SVN access per bug 1150826 I could not get the checkin to work.

Philipp, could you look this over and try to check it in? Or Kohei?

I don't have access to the mozillamessaging.com repo.

OK then we'll let Fallen try. He had a recent successful checkin there.

Could you review the redirect though Kohei?
I just checked, I don't have access to the live.mozillamessaging.com repo. I believe I just got access to the autoconfig repo. I can file another bug to get access.

change redirect

The redirect itself looks fine though. I don't know if we need the ?uri request parameter for SUMO though?
