dragging a bookmark directory inside the bookmarks sidebar crashed mozilla.  I
created a new bookmark directory then dragged it to try to keep the directories
in alphabetic order.

The full backtrace is included as an attachment, and copy/pasted below.

when you say "bookmark directory" - do you mean "bookmark folder"?
This may be a dup of bug 114215, depending on what got included in your build.
The fix was checked in a short hour earlyer it seems.
(i)  I meant bookmark folder. 
(ii) My .mozconfig was posted in a previous comment
(iii)I'll try today's build
looks similar to bug 116980 (Crash when moving bookmarks around within a folder).

I haven't seen the crash since.  I'm running 2002010715 now
