Details

Adding bugs to the ETL process are hard to remove because the old data must be reprocessed. A staging server can act as a long term testing ground to see what will crop up over the diversity of data.

Due to this project's youth, the "staging" servers are the most reliable. There are no formal production servers. In light of this, there are "beta" machines with completely different configuration; designed to fit on a single machine. It does not scale, but it should provide a test bed to catch the most egregious programming errors. The setup of the beta machines is now in the repo.
